What is a Content Delivery Network?

A Content Delivery Network (CDN) is a geographically distributed group of servers that work together to provide fast delivery of Internet content, such as HTML pages, JavaScript files, stylesheets, images, and videos. By caching content close to end users and distributing it across multiple locations, CDNs improve website load times, reduce bandwidth costs, increase content availability and redundancy, and enhance website security.

How CDN Works

Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) operate by strategically placing servers at Internet exchange points (IXPs) and data centers around the world. These servers cache popular content, allowing for faster delivery to end users. When a user requests content, the CDN directs the request to the server closest to the user or the one with the most capacity, ensuring optimal performance.

CDNs offer numerous benefits, including improved website load times, reduced bandwidth costs, increased content availability and redundancy, and enhanced security. They can handle various types of content, such as video streaming, software downloads, and web and mobile content acceleration. CDNs also optimize content delivery based on the properties of the browser requesting it, contributing to a better user experience.

CDN vs Traditional Hosting
